Clothes Calls in the Fabrics of Our Lives

A clothes and costumes care instruction article
Everyone has done it at least once in their lives - wash a red article of clothing with their whites and end up with pink socks. Fabric care mishaps happen every day, whether you are washing special outfits for the holidays or your daughter's schoolgirl uniform. The fabric used to create clothing is either made from natural materials that can be grown or harvested or they are manufactured in a controlled setting. Each type of material is unique and has its own care instructions. By learning the basics of fabric care, you can ensure that your clothes will last for a long time.

Cotton - The Most Popular of All Natural Fibers
Cotton comes from a plant and is a versatile fabric. It's durable, dyeable and also one of the easiest materials to care for. Cotton is used in a variety of things like curtains, bed sheets, adult Halloween costumes and other types of clothing for people of all ages. Here are a few other helpful tidbits of information:
  1. Cotton can be machine washable or dry cleaned.
  2. The wrinkle factor is high, so cotton usually needs to be ironed.
  3. Bleach can be used on cotton - chlorine bleach for whites and color safe bleach for dyed clothing.

Polyester -The Most Used Manufactured Material
You've most likely have heard of wash-and-wear clothing. Polyester makes that possible. It is often blended with other fabrics like cotton, wool or rayon for a stronger, resilient material. Polyester in itself can maintain its shape against stretching or rough handling. Keep in mind these other factors:
  1. It is easily washed and able to be dry cleaned.
  2. Wrinkles don't like polyester much, which means less ironing for you.
  3. Static cling and stains are among the few problems polyester has.

Silk - A Luxurious Natural Fiber … All Thanks to the Silk Worm
Women's fashion like blouses, scarves and lingerie are often made from silk. High-end decorative items like draperies, pillows and sheets can be constructed of silk too. It is a thin, somewhat delicate fabric that should be stored away from pesky critters and exposure to the sun. Other items of consideration in regards to silk include:
  1. Dry cleaning is the preferred method of maintenance. There are washable silk
  2. fabrics and those should be washed by hand with a mild detergent.
  3. Silk is soft and drapes well when used in clothing.
  4. Static cling is not an issue with silk but snagging can be a problem.

Spandex - A Manufactured Material with some Stretch of the Imagination
You are not likely to find spandex a part of your regular clothes or work uniforms. You will find spandex in swimsuits, stockings, socks and other clothing where stretch is a good thing. Some sports clothes like bicycle shorts or jogging bras are other examples. It is often combined with other fabrics to make a solid foundation for clothing. There are other spandex characteristics:
  1. It is smooth and lightweight, hence the use in a lot of sporting apparel.
  2. Spandex is machine washable but at cold or warm temperatures only. A low dryer setting or even drip dry is preferred.
  3. This material can be stretched repeatedly and still retain its original shape.
  4. Ironing is strongly discouraged. If the spandex is creased, mist it lightly with water and toss in the dryer on a low setting to get rid of wrinkles. Or, use the lowest iron setting possible.

Linen -A Natural Fiber Suited to Veggie Lovers
Home décor items like curtains and tablecloths are often made from linen, a vegetable-based natural fiber from the flax plant. In addition, linen is a popular cloth for ladies' suits and article separates appropriate for the work place or casual wear. It can be lightweight or even heavier, depending on its use. Sometimes, linen is blended with other fabrics like polyester for wrinkle resistance. Take note of other linen traits:
  1. Linen is hand-washable, but dry cleaning is preferred. Use warm water and a low dryer setting.
  2. 100% linen is easily wrinkled or creased so ironing is needed.
  3. It is soft and comfortable with twice the strength of cotton.
  4. You can dye linen without worrying about material degeneration.

Wool -The Natural Fiber that Sheep Swear By
You will likely find wool in clothing items for cool weather. It is a great insulator, so it will trap warmth without adding bulk. Wool is also found in a variety of non-attire like carpeting, blankets, and other decorative items. Even some schoolgirl uniforms are made of wool because of its softness and versatility. There are other winning traits of wool:
  1. Wool is washable, but you have to take care and air-dry it at room temperature.
  2. Dry cleaning is the preferable option for maintenance, especially if you will be storing the wool garments indefinitely.
  3. Moths love wool, so you have to store any wool clothing with cedar hangers or slip cedar balls into a zippered garment bag.
  4. Wool is fairly wrinkle-resistant. For any visible creases, you can hang the wool garment out overnight or in a bathroom with a steamy shower going if you are in a time crunch.

There is no "one size fits all" approach to caring for fabrics. Before turning the dial on your washing machine or measuring out the bleach, look at your clothing tags or cleaning instructions. If there are no tags indicating the type of fabric or its care, go with the path of least damage - hand wash in cool or lukewarm water with a mild soap, rinse, and then air dry. Better safe than sorry.
